Susquehanna River Valley – Looking for Fall Color

by Bill ~ October 24th, 2008. Filed under: Flying Adventures, Pictures.

The Susquehanna River provides about 1/5th of the fresh water in the Chesapeake Bay. The river originates at Otsego Lake in Cooperstown, NY, and flows south through eastern Pennsylvania and into Maryland, entering the Chesapeake Bay at Havre de Grace, MD.

We had been looking forward to a clear afternoon/evening in which to catch colorful sights of October trees in their fall foliage glory. Last evening we had a smooth flight north from Harford County Airport (0W3) north into Pennsylvania. We turned around just before we got between York and Lancaster. We’ll save those cities for another day – and with an appetite, so we can check out the eateries at each airport.

Unfortunately, we were a bit disappointed in the lack of fall foliage color. Perhaps the abundance of rain this year has retarded the decline of chlorophyll production and is holding back the color changes. Howerver we did get one nice photo of a patchwork quilt of farmland about 15 miles north of Havre de Grave along the west bank of the Susquehanna. Looking on the bright side, the flight was wonderful and we now have an excuse to repeat the track late next week – in hopes of seeing more color, a lot more color.

The picture is wonderful. Just look at that horizon. Hopefully, your next trip will bring you better coloration on the trees, but it is still quite beautiful.

Also, I looked at the interior picture below. I am amazed at the condition of the airplane. It only looks a couple of years old. Congrats on finding one in such great shape.

Not much foliage, but WOW you can’t complain with THAT beautiful view. Was that a top down shot?

Thank you, guys, for the compliment on the photo. No, not a “top down” shot – that was through the side window. It was actually quite cool that afternoon – I recall trying out the cabin heater.

    Bill,

I have been planning the same “river tour”. I decided to make the run to KWBW on the river in wilkes-barre, pa and head south to the bay but the wx did not make for a nice day of flying.

Maybe we will have to make this one together or meet half way and do lunch. I posted the link to my “plan”, maybe one day soon I’ll get it done.

Great web pages and nice pictures, I will add your web page to my collection of links.
